The 3rd annual Girls’ Adventures in Math was held this spring. There were competitions in 11 sites around the country. Over 150 middle school teams participated, including teams from prestigious schools in New York (such as Brearly, Speyer Legacy, Spence) and Los Angeles (such as Mirman, Geffen, South Pasadena). Two MBMS teams participated at Geffen Academy on April 13. The national results were just released and one of our MBMS teams had the 2nd highest score in the country (with no ties for 1st or 2nd). The members of that team were:
- Rose Cohen, 6th grade
- Karyn Fu, 8th grade
- Katherine Kligys, 6th grade
- Scarlett Peterman, 6th grade
There was also an upper elementary school (3rd-5th grade) contest held at the same time. Prior to the contest, the MBMS team hosted teams from four MBUSD elementary schools for a training session. Besides learning about the contest, this provided an opportunity for girls across the district to get excited about math and for the middle school girls to mentor the younger students. The MB elementary schools did very well with a team from Pennekamp placing in the top 5% and teams from Meadows and Grand View placing in the top 20%.
Congratulations to all participants and winners!
