MBMS Library & Technology Returns Schedule

Dear Parents,

In preparation for the end of the school year, we are planning a Library and Technology Returns Event. Please see the information below and help your child locate all library and technology items in advance. This information will be made available on the MBMS Website for future reference. It is important that students turn in items by the due date in order to avoid fines and holds on their record.

MBMS Library & Technology Returns Schedule
Students will attend the Returns Event with their Humanities or English class on the following dates. Each class has an assigned time slot. Students should plan to return all library and tech materials during their visit.
  • 6th & 8th Grade: Monday, June 10
  • 7th Grade: Tuesday, June 11
Textbook and Library Book Return Information
Students should be prepared to turn in the following library materials on their scheduled return date:
  • 6th grade students do not have textbooks checked out. They must return all library books.
  • 7th grade students must return World Language textbooks (if applicable) and library books.
  • 8th grade students must return World Language textbooks (if applicable), Algebra textbooks (if applicable), MAUS books, and library books.
**The vast majority of students returned Spanish and French textbooks at the beginning of the year when MBMS transitioned to the new online textbook. Please check Destiny if you need to verify whether your student has a Spanish or French textbook checked out. See below for instructions to log into your student’s account.
Technology Return/Renewal Information
Students should be prepared to turn in the following materials on their scheduled return date:
  • 6th & 7th grade students must bring their school-issued Chromebook to the library to be evaluated. Devices will be renewed for the 24-25 school year.
  • 8th grade students must turn in their school-issued Chromebook and original Lenovo chargers on return day. Students who do not bring their chargers will be fined $60 in their record for the missing item. The school cannot accept 3rd party chargers in place of the original.
  • Any school-issued Chromebook that is not renewed (6th/7th grade) or returned (8th grade) by 1:00pm on the last day of school will be remotely locked and a fine of $280 will be applied to the student account.
  • Chromebooks cannot be dropped off at the MBMS main office or MBUSD offices. Devices can only be renewed or returned by the MBMS tech office staff. Please plan accordingly.
Destiny - Student Library Records
All library books, textbooks, and devices are checked out to students on their library Destiny circulation records. Use the following steps to check your child’s account:
  • Under the "Middle Schools" section, click "Manhattan Beach Middle School" to enter the MBMS Catalog site.
  • In the Catalog screen, click LOG IN at the top right of the Manhattan Beach Middle School (MBMS) screen.
    • User Name = Student ID number (same as on ID card your student uses to purchase lunch)
    • Password = destiny (same password for all students)
  • Check that you are in the correct library record by looking for your student's name in the upper right corner of the screen.
  • Click on the MY INFO tab in the upper left of the screen to see your student's library record, including items checked out (library books, textbooks, devices), due dates of check-outs, if there are overdue items, and any fines on the record. This record includes any issues left over from elementary school.
Missing and Damaged Materials
A replacement or repair fee must be paid for any missing or damaged items. If a student does not return an item or pay the relevant fee, it will be noted on their Destiny library record. Returning MBMS students may not be able to check out library books, textbooks, or Chromebooks in August for the new school year. Unresolved library fines and overdue items from elementary school or MBMS may cause a delay in registration at Mira Costa High School. Please clear your child’s library record. See the following links for fees/fines associated with missing/damaged materials.

Payments can be made by CASH or CHECK (made out to MBUSD) to the library. For a check, please write your child’s name in the memo line. If sending cash, please send the EXACT amount as the library cannot make change. Credit cards cannot be accepted onsite at MBMS at this time. However, it is possible to pay fines via MySchoolBucks using a credit card.

General Information
  • Students that miss their assigned return day due to an absence may come to the library and tech office any subsequent day during school hours.  For anticipated absences, students are encouraged to go to the library and tech office ahead of time to take care of returns.
  • Any materials that are not turned in at the Returns Event must be turned in to the MBMS library circulation desk prior to 1:00pm on the last day of school (Thursday, June 13). After that, all materials are considered overdue.
  • Any items not returned by the last day of school will be marked LOST and the replacement fee will be added to the student record. Fees will remain on the student record until resolution and will follow the student through all MBUSD school levels.
  • 8th Graders:  Students may experience a delay in obtaining Mira Costa High School materials (textbooks, library materials, etc.) until unresolved library issues are settled.
  • Overdue library books and textbooks only (NO CHROMEBOOKS or CHARGERS) can be returned to the cart in the main office after 1:00pm on June 13. Any library books or textbooks returned after 1:00pm on June 13 will be stored in the library but will not be scanned into the circulation system until August when the MBMS librarian returns to work after the summer break.
  • Barcode Policy: When a student checks out library materials (book, textbook, Chromebook), the barcode is scanned into the circulation system and the number is matched with the student. At return time, the barcode of the item submitted must match the number reflected in the student’s record. If the student returns an item with a barcode that does not match, the student will be charged a replacement fee.
Questions?
We will send reminders as the Returns Event dates approach. Thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
