MBMS Overview

Manhattan Beach Middle School has earned a national reputation for excellence by providing an exemplary education to the middle school students of Manhattan Beach. The success of MBMS is attributable to many factors, including the commitment and dedication of our students, staff, and parents, and the high quality of instruction provided by our classroom teachers. Manhattan Beach Middle School opened in 1998 as a new, state-of-the-art facility designed specifically to meet the needs of middle school students. The middle school philosophy is reflected in the grade level villages, where classrooms, counseling services, and a workroom are centralized to meet students’ needs efficiently and effectively.

Manhattan Beach Middle School offers a challenging curriculum designed to meet the specific intellectual, physical, and social requirements of middle level children while preparing them for a rigorous high school experience and providing them with necessary life skills.

  • The strong, student-centered core curriculum for each child is comprised of mathematics, English, science, social science, physical education, and exploratory or yearlong electives.
  • Highlights of the curriculum include the humanities block during which the sixth grade students receive integrated instruction in reading, writing, and social science for three consecutive periods taught by one instructor.
  • All seventh and eighth grade students at MBMS have the opportunity to enroll in Spanish, Mandarin or French.
  • MBMS exploratory wheels afford our sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students the opportunity to explore visual and technical arts as well as STEM, world cultures, and career exploration.
  • In lieu of the exploratory wheel, students who are interested in performing arts may choose from several outstanding yearlong elective options. MBMS offers three levels of strings and band and several choral options. MBMS also offers an award-winning yearlong drama program which performs at local festivals and produces multiple stage productions throughout the year.

MBMS supports the emotional and social growth of our students. One student advisor is assigned to each grade level to assist students in meeting their academic, social, and emotional goals and to teach classroom lessons on topics such as effective communication, peer pressure, and bullying prevention. Advisors move with their students as they progress from one grade level to the next. In addition, two full time psychologists are assigned to MBMS. Student organizations such as Leadership (ASB), Yearbook, Journalism, Drama, Art, Vocal Music, Instrumental Music, After School Sports, Clubs, and other activities support students’ personal growth and responsibility.

MBMS is surrounded by a community that is committed to our success. The MBMS PTA encourages parents to become involved in numerous capacities including:
  • summer orientation
  • school pictures
  • book fair
  • fundraising
  • library
  • dances, celebrations and more!

Parents also support the school through their participation in the Manhattan Beach Education Foundation.

MBMS is a community of learners committed to creating the waves of the future.
